FLOPPY EYELID SYNDROME MAY REVEAL THE PRESENCE OF SLEEP APNEA.

As discussed in Practice Pearl of the Week #7, patients who present with chronic staining, inflammation and dry eye may have floppy eyelid syndrome (FES).

However, once you establish a diagnosis of FES, you may wish to ascertain whether the patient has any known history of sleep apnea. If the individual is unaware, referral to a sleep specialist likely is warranted. Why? Because undocumented or untreated sleep apnea is associated with many potentially fatal complications, including:
  • Heart disease and hypertension.1
  • Diabetes.2
  • Depression.3
  • Blacking out while driving.4
