WHEN IT COMES TO EXAMINING A POTENTIALLY MALIGNANT MELANOMA, BE SURE TO USE THE ABCDE RULE.

One of the best pearls for determining whether a nevus on the skin (or the ocular surface) might be malignant is to apply the ABCDE rule:

    Asymmetry–One half of the lesion appears different from the other half.
  • Border–The border is irregular or notched, rather than even.
  • Color–The color is varied with shades of black, brown or tan.
  • Diameter–The diameter is greater than 6mm (or the size of a pencil eraser)
  • Evolving–You note any progressive change, including pain or tenderness, bleeding, redness or swelling, or the development of a new bump or nodule.
