WHEN SHOULD I REFER A PATIENT FOR CHOLESTEROL TESTING?

Although this pearl is well known, it is nonetheless very important. Any patient under age 50 who presents with corneal arcus should be educated about potential hypercholesteremia/hyperlipidemia. Additionally, you may wish to refer him or her for a primary care evaluation and appropriate blood testing.

Furthermore, a diagnosis of two other less common ocular conditions also warrant an evaluation of cholesterol levels:
  • Schnyder crystalline dystrophy.
  • Lipid keratopathy (as seen in the image).
