Five Decades of Dry Eye Management

1960 • The first instance where the term "keratocojunctivitis sicca"was discussed in Review.

1966 • A preliminary discussion of the clinical signs and symptoms of dry eye disease.

1977 • A summarized conclusion from one of the first studies that evaluated the potential clinical utility of tear film break-up time (TFBUT) in the diagnosis of dry eye.

1989 • An early discussion of the potential benefit of punctal occlusion in patients with recurrent dry eye.

1992 • One of the first articles published in Review that explored the relationship between dry eye and several underlying systemic conditions.

2001 • An early assertion that dry eye disease definitely has an inflammatory component that could be managed with cyclosporine. (Published more than a year before Restasis [Allergan] gained FDA approval.)
