Hope your new year has started off right. Speaking of starting things off right, I’d like to start off this entry by announcing the winner of the “Name This Blog, Win Fabulous Prizes!” Contest.

Congratulations, eyeguy53! We’ll be sending you one of our classic REVIEW OF OPTOMETRY logo mugs, just as soon as we figure out your real name. And, thanks to the many, many other people—all four of you—who sent in entries.

Unfortunately, eyeguy53, we will not be using your suggestion. Sorry.

The task of deciding the new name was left to our august panel of judges (including myself and The Lady Who Waters The Plants Here In The Office [TLWWTPHITO]). We came to a stalemate. I lobbied for optoblog’s “A View from the Subjective,” but TLWWTPHITO insisted on eyeguy53’s “From the John.”

Fine. “From the John” won, but I find it depressing to write a blog that starts out with potty humor. Also, my mother would not approve—although not even she reads this blog.

Instead, this blog is changing its name from the accurate but humdrum “John Murphy’s Blog” to … “Eccentric Fixation.”

This was a last minute write-in entry (from me). Not only does “Eccentric Fixation” have an optometric meaning, but it also connotes the off-center topics that this lousy blog has addressed--such as blind umpires, motorcycle-selling optometrists, swine flu, beer goggles and, of course, Oreos that look like eyeballs.

Oh, did I forget to talk about that last one? They’re treats that not only “look good” but taste good, too. Don’t forget to order some next holiday season for your staff!
