I mentioned in my last entry about patients wanting me to measure their PD so they could buy their glasses on the Internet. Well, I have thoroughly ticked off the department's dispensary: Since I don't own a pupillometer nor do I have the time, I have been sending these folks to the glasses dispensary.

The opticians feel this is a slap in the face, that I am making them work for a non-sale. But, as I have tried to explain, I am handing them an opportunity! I am sending them someone in need of exactly what they do: glasses! It is up to them to turn the sale, be friendly, be more knowledgeable than the Internet ... and give them a reason to buy the glasses there. It may not happen in that visit, but they may return when the Internet glasses just "aren't working out."

Instead, unfortunately, what I often see (not just here, mind you, but in many retail settings) is apathy. Well, faceless apathy is what is available on the Internet ... and I hate to tell you, the Internet does it better.
