With one particular patient I saw today, I began to wonder, "Why does karma hate me? What have I done to make everything I do for this patient go so horribly wrong?"
It should have been a simple contact lens fit. The first contact lens I ordered was 10 diopters (Yes, you read that correctly—TEN diopters) off on the power, the second lens had a center thickness of nearly 1.7mm (have you ever tried to keep a 2mm pebble in your eye? This would not have been so bad had I not specifically specified it to be 0.7mm thick), and the third lens came with the same diameter as the base curve.
It's tempting for me to put the blame of this calamity on someone else; I did not order the power wrong, I specified the center thickness, and I provided a written faxed verification of the base curve (not to mention, the base curve was correct the first two times).
Perhaps it is tempting to place the bad karma on the patient, but this patient is only 6 months old ... definitely not old enough for bad karma. Therefore the only reasonable conclusion is that it is me ... I have done something wrong.
What do you do to shake off bad karma ... when seemingly nothing goes right?
